Results from the NZ Secondary School Inline Hockey Cup 2023

Event Information
HIHC ran a successful NZSSC – Inline Hockey tournament over the 12-14th May. A large number of schools competed, with 5 full secondary schools and 10 schools combining to make a further 5 combined schools (2 schools/team). One of the combined schools was dominantly home-school students, and was a test case for School Sport NZ incorporating home-school teams into events such as this. As a result of the large number of entries, the competition was tiered into Plate (combined schools) Cup divisions, with a 4-game RR followed by 3r/4th and 1st/2nd Finals for each tier.
The Plate tier had a range of abilities represented, from school league only players, and brand-new goalies, to some advanced players. It was a great introduction to the competitive aspect of inline hockey for those students who had only played in the Hamilton Secondary school league. The Cup tier had very competitive teams, with most teams being composed of club players, many of whom have represented NZ over the past few years. Both finals were exceptionally tight; the 3rd/4 th final went in to golden-goal overtime, with Hillcrest High School sealing the win over Kerikeri High school in the 6th minute of overtime play. The Cup gold medal final was one of the best games played in a NZSSC inline hockey final. New Plymouth Boys High School had the upper hand for the majority of the game, entering the final 10 mins of play on a 3:1 lead. However, Hamilton Boys High School fought hard, suppressing two NPBHS Power Plays, before scoring on their own Power Play, followed by a quick goal 1 minute later, to even the score. The final goal was scored with barely 40 seconds left on the clock, securing the NZSS Cup for HBHS, the first time they had won it since 2018.
